Mirror reefing

John Hughes 3329
Being new to cruising and my new (old) Mirror, do I need reefing points (sailmaker advised otherwise) and how is it done on the old-type mast?

You don't need to, but personally I found the system of rolling the sail around the boom to be quite awkward to use at sea. I had reef points fitted last winter, and sailing her when rested is much better now, it's easier to do and the sail sets better.  It is also important that you either add a second haliard point on the gaff for the reefed sail.

I would also suggest rigging some sort of lazy jack system, as reefing with the whole lot sliding around on the transom or gunwhale is quite challenging!

This is how mine looks reefed, it is worth getting the reef points done in my opinion. It makes reefing a lot easier.
Cheers,
Rob

Best thing I have done to my mirror !.     I have 2 sets of reefing points added to the main and can sail now in conditions I never would have gone out in before.
