Hi Graham
Having seen the advert for the Wayfarer  W 4967 and the photo ( 10 years old?) Please could you let me know how it has been stored last 10 years unused.
Has it been out door  unprotected etc?
I live in Brightlingsea and have been looking for a W for cruising and maybe a little racing round here.

Please could you mail me additional relevant informations and possibly some up to date photo's .
If the trailer was in road worthy condition (tyres/bearings?) .
Kind regards

Hi Graham
Just wondering why it is that your club has not been using such an apparently nice looking boat for the past ten years?

Now I must get down to doing some boat building if I am to have any chance of being ready for a certain event scheduled for the end of May/beginning June!

John

Hi,  I'll try to answer John and Lars questions together.

We do occasionally take the boat out for an airing.
The Photo was taken about a year ago during one of our try-a-boat days.
The boat is stored on its trailer with it's boom up cover on, bungs out and tipped back to drain any water.
The sails are taken off and stored inside during the winter. It is exactly as it appears in the photo.

The trailer is in tow-away condition the bearings were changed last winter and it hasn't been used since.

So why isn't it used.  A quick plug for St Deny's Sailing & Rowing Club.
Started as a pure rowing club in the 1880s St Deny's has maintained the tradition of owning its own boats.
We have around 50 boats from a Walker Bay 8 through Kayaks, Clinker Rowing Boats, various sailing boats,  up to a recently acquired Drascombe Coaster and a Sailfish. Stop laughing at the back.

All of the boats are available to suitably experienced members at no extra charge above the annual subscription of £105. We aim to encourage a friendly and supportive atmosphere where people can enjoy boating at minimum cost.   We don't race, we do lots of pottering and attend a few Drascombe Rallies.  Application forms available from our web site. We are always looking for new members.

The down side is we are situated way up the River Itchen. Three bridges up the river in fact, all of which require the mast of the Wayfarer to be dropped before even reaching Southampton Water.
People going for a quick pootle locally will take the Lymington Scows or Mirror which are easy to launch and recover, and will go under the bridges. Those wishing to go down water will normally take the bigger Scaffie, Lugger or Coaster which are kept on pontoons and have shorter rigs which can more easily be dropped.

Its horses for courses and the Wayfarer is the wrong horse.

Cheers
Graham.
